She just needs to get through this wedding and then her life with Adam will be her own… right? My So-Called Iraqi-American Wedding asks the question, “How do you listen to your own heart when everything around you is so damn loud?"
Director Biography - AYSER SALMAN
Ayser Salman is a filmmaker and Emmy-nominated editor whose focus is on projects with an eye toward representation, inclusion, and shedding light on underrepresented communities.
Born in Baghdad Iraq and growing up in Kentucky; with a brief stint in Saudi Arabia, Ayser constantly felt like a fish out of water. Her nomadic childhood shaped her interest in storytelling. After shunning her parents’ dream of her becoming a doctor in favor of journalism school, Ayser worked as a news producer in Kentucky before coming to Los Angeles for film school in hopes of becoming a director. When it became apparent that Hollywood wasn’t banging down her door for her Iraqi immigrant stories, Ayser took a brief detour into the publishing world. Her book “The Wrong End of the Table,” a comic memoir about growing up Iraqi Muslim in the South was published in 2019 by Skyhorse Publishing, landed on several cultural best-seller lists, and is currently being developed as a major motion picture. Aside from gaining a new love for writing in the prose format, Ayser realized that if you want to tell your story, you just need to do it yourself. This is what led her to make the short proof of concept film, “My So-Called Iraqi Wedding.”
