5Q's w/: JT Doran "More Dead Than Living" Director
QUESTION 1: What about your film excites you the most?
Everything! The film, the themes, the cast, the fact that it even exists and highlights my family., hometown and a ballsy approach to a ballsy story! We made this for nothing, with not time and everything was serendipitous (I got stories!). It all excites and humbles me!
QUESTION 2: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?Getting something done with little time and even less money. I'll carry that into every film always. There's always a way to get your film made.
QUESTION 3: When youre shooting a film do you think of time as something you capture or something you construct?
It's both - it's something prepared and planned and also something deeply organic and spontaneous. A film is half what you vision and half what you're given by the forces bigger than all of us. It's the best exercise in force and surrender.
QUESTION 4: Whats a limitation you wish you had on your next shoot that would force you into making interesting creative decisions?
1 location. I'm curious and up for the challenge of making a film sing and fly, all the while having it be a one location story. Not easy but its the kind of challenge that I'd love to kick in the nuts!
QUESTION 5: If a film shoot is like a living organism which department do you think functions as its nervous system?
The Director. The director is the parent, the flight or flight response, the cop, the accountant, the therapist, the doctor and the guardian angel all in one. If the director is anxious and it shows, it infects the crew., If the director is calm and confident, it affects the crew. We directors never cut the umbilical cord.
