5Q's w/: Eliza Gibson "Symptoms" Writer, Director
QUESTION#1: What about your film excites you the most?:
That we made it and people get to see it! I love hearing and learning about the conversations that are sparked after seeing the film - women everywhere go through perimenopause but we still don't talk (or laugh!) enough about it. One of the most meaningful for me was learning how after watching Symptoms, a small group of teenage friends - two boys and a girl - were talking about periods. The boys were in fact asking the girl what it's like - this gives me hope!
QUESTION#2: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?:
This was my very first film and I've learned so much it's hard to imagine what about Symptoms WON'T influence my next film.
QUESTION#3: When you’re shooting a film, do you think of time as something you capture or something you construct?:
Oh, I love this question! I'm a musician and think about time, rhythm, tone all the time,. The planning ahead of a shoot is all about constructing time, but then during the shoot, I think time is mostly captured. There are always moments that you discover, that weren't planned - unexpected, beautiful morsels that then have to be in the film. And in post, it's back to constructing time.
QUESTION#4: What’s a limitation you wish you had on your next shoot that would force you into making interesting creative decisions?:
An 8 hour work day.
QUESTION#5: If a film shoot is like a living organism, which department do you think functions as its nervous system?:
Ahhh, not just one! Technically I think it's probably production and the AD. To me, it's the dynamic energy between actors and director, and the DP and lighting and sound. Though the nervousness of the nervous system is definitely all in the AD.
