5Q's w/: Boris Schaarschmidt "Forever After In Love" Director, Writer, Producer

QUESTION 1: What about your film excites you the most?

Besides the excitement of getting to make a film at all, what truly excites me most is my cast. Working with them was an absolute joy. Their on-screen chemistry is incredible, and you can feel it in every scene. Even after watching the footage countless times, I never get tired of it.

Great dialogue, I might add. ;-)

QUESTION 2: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?

I’m planning to expand this story into a longer film built around these characters. Hilary, Ben, and I have already made multiple projects together with these same roles, and this short really helped solidify their world. It works as a great proof of concept, and we easily have enough material to take it toward a feature.

QUESTION 3: When you’re shooting a film do you think of time as something you capture or something you construct?

I see time as something I construct. In narrative work, I like to shape time as much as possible, from the writing to the blocking, and especially in the edit. Of course, you never have enough time when you’re shooting, but creatively, I treat time as a tool I can bend to the needs of the story.

QUESTION 4: What’s a limitation you wish you had on your next shoot that would force you into making interesting creative decisions?

Haha, great question, but for me it’s actually the other way around from what the question suggests. In independent filmmaking, you’re already surrounded by limitations, mostly time and money. So instead of wishing for an additional constraint, I’d actually love the reverse: the freedom to make decisions based purely on creativity rather than budget. That would feel like a whole new kind of challenge.

QUESTION 5: If a film shoot is like a living organism which department do you think functions as its nervous system?

I’d say the First AD or the walkie-talkies usually function as the nervous system. We had neither on this shoot. Talking about limitations.
