5Q's w/: Jason Ward "The Motorcycle Man" Director, Writer, Producer
QUESTION 1: What about your film excites you the most?
John Glover! He’a a Tony-winner who approached this short film as if it were a Broadway play. He turned 80 a month before production, and his energy and talents are awe-inspiring. It was a blast to see him work with our younger leads, - Austin R. Grant, Langley Ward, and Phoenix Parnevik. - who I think you’ll be seeing soon in larger productions.
QUESTION 2: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?
Who I shoot with - for instance Ben Mullin (our DP) and I established a great rhythm. Part of that may be because we played high school football together, but this was our first time teaming up on a film project. Same goes for another friend of mine, Jeff “Hightower” Hightower, who is a casting director and acted as our AD.
QUESTION 3: When youre shooting a film do you think of time as something you capture or something you construct?
I’m not sure if the question is meant in abstract or literal terms, but for shooting, I think of time in literal terms, and you construct it in pre-production with the shot list then then capture it as quickly as possible during production. Jeff and Ben did a great job with this, we shot the film in three days from 9-5, even with a 90-minute delay on day one because the local CHP forgot to schedule the traffic control.! We had to flag down an officer driving by on patrol and he ended up doing it - he was great.
QUESTION 4: Whats a limitation you wish you had on your next shoot that would force you into making interesting creative decisions?
I’d like to limit the limitations. But on this shoot, a tight budget led me to bringing my college roommate and Redlands native Chad Roghair in to hold the boom. I knew he could handle it because he played quarterback in college and is a large individual. Our sound man Julio Deras trained him up. Chad's a doctor in real life, so of course now he is Dr. Boom.
QUESTION 5: If a film shoot is like a living organism which department do you think functions as its nervous system?
Craft and transportation. Buffie Williams and Olivia Main in this case. We had about a 25 minute drive to the set so we all got to hang out a bit. Everyone showed up on time, left on time, and was happy with the provisions. That was important.
