5Q's w/: Jorrit Van Der Kooi "The Golden Hours" Director, Writer, Producer
QUESTION 1: What about your film excites you the most?
I loved working with such talented actors who brought my story to life in ways that matched—and even exceeded—what I originally envisioned. I also love seeing audiences connect with our film and experience its emotions on every level.
QUESTION 2: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?
I want to continue creating meaningful, impactful films that share messages about humanity and bring people closer together. I’m also drawn to stories with spiritual and existential motivations that shape the characters’ journeys. And I definitely hope to keep exploring multigenerational storylines in my future work.
QUESTION 3: When you’re shooting a film do you think of time as something you capture or something you construct?
Interesting question. I’d say it’s a combination of both. In the screenwriting phase, we construct time, and during filming, we capture it. for eternity.
QUESTION 4: What’s a limitation you wish you had on your next shoot that would force you into making interesting creative decisions?
Limitations can really stimulate the creative process. All filmmakers deal with budget constraints, and for that reason alone we’re constantly making choices. Earlier this year, I entered a short film competition where we were given a specific theme—Oneness of Humankind—and every film had to reflect it. Instead of feeling restricted, I found it inspiring, and we actually won first prize out of 700 submissions.
But to answer your question more directly: I wouldn’t voluntarily wish for a limitation, haha.
QUESTION 5: If a film shoot is like a living organism which department do you think functions as its nervous system?I’d say it relates to the entire cast and crew—we’re all part of the same nervous system. But if I had to choose one department, it would be the director. And in the case of our film The Golden Hours, I’m also the writer and producer, so everything comes together and I’m constantly switching and combining roles.
